India’s continued focus on Ms. Khobragade’s humiliation rather than bondage of females in servant roles missed the boat. There is no shame just justification for a tradition that should be called slavery. Two articles below demonstrate that point. I provided excerpts from each.

Americans were shocked at the alleged $3.31-per-hour wage paid to an Indian diplomat’s housekeeper in a case that has sparked global outrage.

In November, a New Delhi court ordered an Indian lawmaker and his wife to be held in police custody for allegedly torturing to death a maid at their home.

The case came soon after a teenage maid was rescued from another upscale Delhi home by police and social rights campaigners, who said she had been slashed with knives and mauled by dogs.

The Global Slavery Index, released in October, found an estimated 13.95 million people in India are victims of forced labour — making up almost half of the world’s slave population. Domestic service is a key area of concern.

The Dec. 13 arrest and strip-search of Devyani Khobragade, India’s deputy consul general in New York, has sparked a diplomatic storm between the United States and India.

US prosecutors say Khobragade lied on a visa form about how much she paid her housekeeper. The diplomat has pleaded not guilty.

India has protested Khobragade’s treatment and said the strip-search was degrading and unnecessary.

The US Marshals service said it is standard procedure. But in India, such treatment for an educated, middle-class woman is almost unimaginable.

India vows to return dignity to the elite Ms Khobragade for underpaying her MAID, and perhaps abuse and support for a system of bondage in which vulnerable women are mistreated and murdered by their MASTERS. . BTW, an exception was made for Ms. Khobragade,  she is home with an apology, fortunately, not from our President, she does not deserve one.

Put aside ego of the culture for one moment, is this justice? What about the human rights of her maid? I would like to hear from her maid…on second thought, fear would prevent her maid  from speaking the truth.   That is the story, most disturbing is the irrelevance of human bondage, why is that not covered?   What does that say about us?
