Malcolm X: Who Taught You To Hate Yourself? |Video

“It’s just like when you’ve got some coffee that’s too black, which means it’s too strong. What do you do? You integrate it with cream, you make it weak. But if you pour too much cream in it, you won’t even know you ever had coffee. It used to be hot, it becomes cool. It used to be strong, it becomes weak. It used to wake you up, now it puts you to sleep.” -Malcolm X

  1. These words shouldn´t blind us towards the fact that lateron Malcom became aware that the whole thing is even more about class than “race”, which opened up alliances. That was most probably his “death sentence”! Cordial regards

  2. That was inspiring. I wasn’t familiar with the coffee quote before, and I thought that was a fascinating analogy (I do like coffee, so I’m biased in that sense. Haha). That speech of “Who taught you to hate yourself” really struck home because I’ve had self-loathing issues and part of it was racial. I’ve been waking up a lot more so to how there are racist implications is so many mainstream media projects whether it’s the news, TV, books, and movies regardless of the target audience and demographics. I wanted to fight against those stereotypes and hateful messages by writing fiction with positive portrayals of characters from all ethnic groups. It felt great creating my own worlds and characters that way. I needed to see that coffee video today, and I thank you for it.

    1. Oh, you’re welcome. That speech is one of my favorites.

It’s people like you who give me hope. Writing books with positive portrayals of ethnic characters is a good start. Taking them from the background and into the spotlight. You have a powerful skill.

      1. Sure thing. It was very touching and I needed to hear that speech.

Thank you so much. Writing had been a form of healing for me and I’m happy to have finally published some of my books after writing fiction consistently for the past 4 years. One example is the cell phone novel I serialized last year called Hollandus Landing. I have 40 different narrators and each one gets equal time explaining their side of the story. Several ethnicities are represented. Not to sound all self-promotional, but you can get it for free or by tipping here: https://books.noisetrade.com/cmbbell/hollandus-landing

          1. Thanks. I wanted to do something different even in the context of a cell phone novel. It’s fun for me writing experimental forms of literature and being creative.
