Get Lei’d party cruise: Young Man Drowns Horseplaying While Witnesses Snapchat

Boston, MA.  A disturbing drowning occurred last night on a Blues cruise called “Get Lei’d” party cruise.  Everyone knows blues cruises are about fun–drinking, music and getting laid–not tragedies.

Last night, a 21-year-old young white male drowned while horseplaying off a cruise ship. He hung off the side of the ship while friends and hundreds of witnesses took videos and sent Snapchats. After he slipped and fell in the ocean, most friends and witnesses on board were so intoxicated, they continued to take pictures instead of appreciating the danger.  Someone did throw the drowning and probably intoxicated young man a life jacket or buoy within 2 feet of him but I gather the darkness hindered his ability to see and he swam away from the buoy. After 5-10 minutes, he went under. The Massachusetts State Police eventually recovered his body.

This was a tragedy. Prayers to the family and friends of the young man.

Asked if the coastguard should have followed the cruise ship knowing the passengers were young adults under the influence, I didn’t think it was their job.  However, I wondered if the cruise company for “Get Lei’d” party cruise had lifeguards/divers on board ready to don a wetsuit and rescue drunken passengers who often fall overboard.

Did the Get Lei’d party cruise have lifeguards or some equivalent on board?  In this case, it could have saved a life.
