Republicans have skillfully turned the tables. They have used Biden’s talk of unity to argue that Trump’s criminal action should be swept under the rug. But doing nothing is a dangerous precedent.
There can be no unity if there isn’t accountability. Any unity that forms without accountability is built on a shaky foundation of distrust, effectively kicking the ball down the road for next time. Do we sacrifice the future for superficial unity today?
Not holding Trump accountable keeps a dangerous lie alive–the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. Nothing could be farther from the truth! It is a lie that incited a violent coup where domestic terrorists attempted to take over the Capitol building. They were prepared to maim and kill members of Congress, including the vice president. Five people were killed and many more injured during this attempt.
They came to the Capitol because President Trump invited them. They had extensive inside help. Many involved were from law enforcement, including the Capitol Police, the FBI, Secret Service, and even our military. There were members of Congress aiding and abetting the terrorists.
How can we make things worse and divide America more? By not telling the truth and by not holding those responsible accountable, we trample on the rule of law.
We can’t move on unless Trump and his domestic terrorist supporters are held accountable. Before unity and healing can occur, Americans need to agree on the truth. Joe Biden won the election fair and square. On January 6, 2021, right-wing white nationalist domestic terrorists incited by their leader, Donald Trump, attempted a violent coup on our Capitol.
To this day, Trump and a majority of Republicans cannot admit the truth. Instead, they continue to disseminate the same lies that led to the coup attempt on the Capitol.
Taking the time to do the right thing is never wrong. Trump is a dangerous and powerful man. Covid killed hundreds of thousands of Americans because of his deliberate lack of policy. We have an opportunity to make sure he never threatens our democracy again. We should not squander it with excuses that are motivated by cowardice or political gain—the truth matters. Do the right thing!
