Aren’t governments supposed to provide for society’s well-being or safety?

Texas government is not doing its job. It’s not serving the people. Texas leads the world with the highest number of mass killings. The government’s response, namely, Abbott and the Republicans, is to make more guns accessible. That policy is not working. Instead, it’s fueling gun violence in Texas and nationwide.

Has Abbott or the Republicans considered the possibility that many illegal immigrants come to Texas to buy weapons? Its lax gun ownership laws sell twice as many guns as any other state. It’s the State to load up on weapons of mass destruction such as assault rifles (AR).

Last weekend, a four-time deported illegal immigrant, 38-year-old Francisco Oropeza, used an AR to kill his neighbors and eluded Texas law enforcement for days, putting Texas’s surrounding communities at risk and on edge. Abbott dismissed the killing as involving illegal immigrants and, therefore, a non-event–nothing to see. He showed what was in his heart before recognizing the ramifications of his words.  

Abbott claims to be so tough on illegal immigrants that a man four times deported could re-enter and travel freely through Texas with an assault rifle and murder his neighbors, think about that!

Last night in Allen, Texas, a mass shooting in a mall killed eight children and adults. This time Gov Abbott offered fake condolences. He is responsible for the explosion of aggression and mass killings in the State: He and the Republican legislature. Making guns more widely available than they already were in Texas led to a parabolic rise in mass shootings in Texas. The only winners of mass shootings are gun stores, Republicans, and the NRA.

Republicans are so pro-life they want women to sacrifice their lives to preserve the life of a fertilized egg. However, they will not lift a finger to save the lives of living children and adults. How is that pro-life?

I guess Abbott and the Republicans have nothing to fear. Texas is so heavily gerrymandered to keep these politicians of death in power until eternity, whether the people of Texas like it or not.

Another food for thought:  What is the Biden administration doing about the rising numbers of deaths and disabilities from mass shootings in the country? From where I stand, he’s too busy fighting a proxy war in Ukraine to see the war on living children and adults in the country where he is commander and chief. Is there no way he can take federal control of the Texas government to protect its residents from gun violence? We need asylum from gun violence in Texas!

I am no expert, just an intelligent person with common sense. Since Abbott and Republicans have no clue on what to do, I suggest:

  1. Raise the age of gun ownership from 18 to 21 years old. Vote on HB 2744!
  2. Strict background checks, especially for severe mental illness.
  3. Ban Assault Rifles. They do not belong on the streets.
  4. Border security should be a multiprong approach with multiple lines of defense in case illegal immigrants slip through the cracks like Oropeza.
  5. Make research on guns available to the public. The NRA prevented such research.
  6. Spend more on improving access to mental health. After the trauma of Covid and now daily mass shootings, Americans need help.
  7. Criminalize media companies and employees for lying to the public and inciting violence. 

Can you think of anything else?

One other question:  What pleasure or benefit does the ton of Republican society derive from watching or hearing about the preventable and unnecessary deaths of ordinary people living their lives? They must get something or else this would not be happening.

    Perhaps rewrite all state and federal constitutions to secure the welfare you think is secured.

    I have this suggestion as a point 7 to your well-structured list, Angela: “Defund DoD-MIC-CIA-FBI et al by at least 75 percent, with immediacy and for starters. Divert the hundreds of billions of annual savings to needed societal imperatives, with a share to uplifting respect, diplomacy, and peace — instead of belligerence, insults, and militarism — vis-a-vis America’s misadventures and war crimes in the international realm. Fully fund, staff, and operationalize the Department of Peace, co-equal to all other cabinet-level elements of the executive branch.”

    1. Hi Bob. I appreciate the like and your support. Thank you. It’s a great idea to have a Department of Peace. That might change the focus from wars to peaceful resolutions. A ripple effect might be an overall decrease in violent crimes. There is a lot of waste in DoD. Over 50-75% of the money they get is wasted or unaccounted for. FBI and law enforcement create crimes instead of solving them. Their bread and butter is incarcerating or murdering POC while violent white men roam the streets freely, spewing hate and killing people with weapons of mass destruction.
